9/30/2024 - Poulsbo fiber break

Update 1230AM - All services restored!

Update 7:30PM - Spoke with the splice crew.

  • There are 3 splice points going in to perform the repair.

  • The center big one is done.

  • They are working on the two ends at the same time with 2 seperate crews.

Update 6:30PM - A neighbor asked the crew how its going, KPUD indicated full restoration by 9PM

Update 3:20PM - New fiber is up and splicing has started. The splicing will take several hours and services will come back as they complete.

Update 1:00PM - The contractor is onsite setting new strand and fiber.

KPUD will be cutting the existing fiber all the way through (taking another 12 business offline) and splicing in the replacement to repair the damage

KPUD splicing crew is at the site and will start splicing as soon as the contractor gets one end set.

New fiber is being spliced “between” the cut shown above, so each splice is actually 2 splices, there are hundreds to perform here.

This cut was down by a chain saw, not a hydraulic shears (the tool of choice for copper thieves). Our suspicion is that tree trimmers working for PSE nicked the lines yesterday but didn’t tell anyone. They never do. The polite trimmers tie a flag at the spot they damaged the lines to aid in location.

There is a lot going on with this cut, it is very unfortunate that they nicked the galvanized steel strand at the top of the stack. This must be replaced before fiber repair.

The next fiber down is a “legacy” backbone, this one serves homes/cell towers/and about a dozen large commercial/governmental customers.

The bottom is the new residential fiber.

My estime is that services will start coming back online around 3PM
